Prehistory:
- In a joint statement on December 31, the foreign ministers of Germany, Poland and France reiterated their condemnation of acts of violence against peaceful demonstrators, the media and opposition leaders in recent weeks.
- They added that they will implement the EU’s decision to cancel the visa-free regime for holders of Georgian diplomatic and official passports and will consider “additional measures at the EU and national level.”
- The Baltic states, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Finland called on the Georgian authorities to end violence against protesters and consider holding new elections.
- The US State Department announced a ban on issuing visas to 20 people involved in the suppression of democracy in Georgia, including government officials and deputies.
