Elon Musk’s post on social networks about his support for the far-right German party “Alternative for Germany” caused a backlash and accusations of meddling in the election.
Musk wrote on the X platform that AdN is the only party capable of “saving Germany”. This caused sharp indignation of politicians of the entire spectrum.
Alisa Weidel, chancellor candidate from the AdN, enthusiastically welcomed Musk’s support.
She replied: “Yes! You are absolutely right, @elonmusk! Please watch my interview about President Trump, Merkel’s socialist legacy, the destructive Soviet Union, and Germany’s economic decline!”
However, leading German politicians expressed indignation.
Dennis Radtke, a member of the European Parliament from the center-right CDU party, called Musk’s comments “irritating and unacceptable”, accusing the billionaire of meddling in the German election.
According to German media, Radtke also called Musk a “threat to democracy” and criticized X as a platform for disinformation.
Alex Schaefer of the center-left SPD party condemned Musk’s remarks as “completely unacceptable,” stressing the importance of resolutely resisting foreign interference.
Meanwhile, former finance minister Christian Lindner of the FDP admitted that Musk had influenced some of his policy guidelines in the past, but warned him against supporting AdN. “AdN opposes freedom, business and democracy – it is a far-right extremist party,” Lindner tweeted.
Musk later emphasized his position, saying that AdG is “common sense politics” and rejected the “far-right label”.
Addition
Chancellor Olaf Scholz, whose government collapsed last month over budget disagreements, took a more measured stance.
He affirmed Musk’s right to express his opinion, adding that “freedom of speech includes the freedom to be wrong.”
The controversy comes as Germany prepares for elections on February 23, after Scholz’s coalition government collapsed.
Political leaders across Germany have unanimously rejected any cooperation with the AdN, underscoring the party’s controversial position in the political landscape.
