Ten days after the collapse of the government coalition, the faction of the Free Democratic Party of Germany, which left this coalition, announced its readiness to bring the issue of the possibility of supplying Ukraine with Taurus long-range missiles to the Bundestag, but this initiative will have no chance of success.

This is reported by Tagesspiegel, Ukrinform reports.

The leader of the parliamentary group of the VDP, Christian Dürr, said that he plans to put this issue to a vote in the Bundestag. “It would be an opportunity. When I look at the statements of the CDU/CSU bloc and the Greens, I can certainly imagine that such a bid could be successful,” Dürr told the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung.

However, the “Greens”, who remain in the minority government, do not want to further weaken the chancellor, although they support the transfer of missiles to Kyiv.

“It is clear that we are still in the government with SPD and we will vote accordingly,” said Greens representative Irene Mihalic.

Unlike Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s SPD, the Greens and the Democratic People’s Party have long advocated the delivery of long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine. This is also supported by conservatives who are currently in the opposition. The CDU/CSU has brought the issue to the floor of the Bundestag several times, but failed each time. During the last such vote in March of this year, the SPD, Greens and VDP factions once again unanimously voted against it, only two liberals – Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann and Wolfgang Kubicki of the VDP – went against party discipline and voted against.

So, if Germany does ever hand over the Taurus to Ukraine, it will only happen under the next federal government, unless Scholz leads it again.

As reported by Ukrinform, the head of the German Foreign Ministry demands the transfer of additional reconnaissance drones to Ukraine.
