The operation to liquidate the tent city of the protesters, which appeared in the center of Tbilisi near the Tbilisi State University, took place after the participants of the protest did not fulfill the ultimatum of the security forces.
The tent city was located at the beginning of Chavchavadze Avenue, not far from the city center, and arose after the announcement of the official results of the parliamentary elections. In response to the protest, the police fired water cannons and demanded that the participants remove their tents within 15 minutes. After the expiration of this period, the security forces began dismantling the tent city.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia stated that the dispersal of the action was necessary due to the violation of citizens’ rights to free movement, as the protesters blocked part of Chavchavadze Avenue.
The protests began after the official results of the elections, according to which the ruling party “Georgian Dream” won an absolute majority of seats in the parliament. The opposition, however, does not recognize these results, accusing the government of falsifications and anti-democratic policies.
