The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi said the day before that the defense of Pokrovsk continues, Ukrainian troops control part of the city, and Myrnograd is not surrounded.
On December 1, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation announced on its resources the alleged capture of Pokrovsk. Donbas Realiy (a Radio Liberty project) has collected statements and data refuting the occupation of the city.
Pokrovsk – a city with a population of about 1,250 people (estimated by the local authorities at the end of October, before the start of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation – more than 60,000) – is an important road and railway junction and was under threat of encirclement by Russian troops for most of the year.
On December 9, Syrskyi also reported that the front line is now 1,218 kilometers long, and it has decreased by 35 kilometers in a month. According to the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, the rate of enemy advance in some areas is 1.5-4.5 km per month, in particular, in the Pokrovsky direction – 1.5 km per month. With daily losses of more than a thousand Russian soldiers, such an advance is worthless, according to Syrskyi.
