Since the beginning of this day, 124 combat clashes have taken place on the front, the most attacks have been recorded in the Pokrovsky direction and the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, according to the evening summary of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on January 12.

“Since the beginning of this era, in the Pokrovsky direction, the Russians have tried 50 times to break through our defenses near the settlements of Elizavetivka, Lysivka, Zelene, Promin, Novy Trud, Pokrovsk, Udachne, Kotlyne, Novovasylivka, Sribne, Petropavlivka, Novoandriivka, Dachne, Shevchenko and Yantarne . So far, six clashes are ongoing,” the message states.

In the operational zone in Kurshchyna, units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine repelled 17 attacks by Russian troops during the day.

“The Russian invaders carried out 28 airstrikes, using 36 anti-aircraft missiles, two missile strikes, using two missiles. In addition, the Russians brought in 985 kamikaze drones and fired about five thousand shots at the positions of our troops and populated areas,” the headquarters say.

Russian troops also advanced in the Kharkiv, Kupyan, Lyman, Kramatorsk, Toretsk, and Novopavliv directions.

Since the beginning of the day, Russian troops have not conducted active operations in the Siverskyi, Orihivskyi, Gulyaipilskyi, and Prydniprovskyi directions.

The DeepState project and the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported that the Russian army in the first days of 2025 is actively capturing new territories to the south, southeast and east of Pokrovsk.

Former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (2014–2019), Viktor Muzhenko, told Radio Svoboda in an interview that Russia does not aim to capture Pokrovsk directly, but seeks to blockade the city. According to him, the blockade of Pokrovsk “is more beneficial for the Russian army, as it allows to minimize its own losses and at the same time creates significant problems for the defense of Ukrainian forces.”

Subsequently, these intentions of the Russian troops were confirmed by the spokesman of the Khortytsia operational-strategic troop group, Viktor Tregubov. According to him, Russian troops are trying to bypass the city of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region in order to break the logistical chains and thus take the city into an operational environment.
