Details: As noted, EU leaders were preparing to spend this week in Davos, persuading Trump to provide security guarantees to post-war Ukraine. Today they woke up wondering if his promises could be trusted at all.

The storm surrounding Trump’s desire to take over Greenland has turned from a bilateral dispute into the most serious threat to NATO in decades and the deepest rift in transatlantic relations, the report said.

According to a European diplomat, EU leaders and their delegations, who are due to meet Trump and US officials in Davos, are “tearing up their notes” and replacing them with what the source described as “whip and gingerbread” – how Brussels might respond to Trump’s tariffs, along with de-escalation proposals.

“How can you sit down at the negotiating table with this person (Trump. – Ed.) and discuss his security guarantees for Ukraine? He cannot be trusted unless you turn off reality,” the diplomat said.

EU leaders will gather for an emergency summit later this week, tentatively scheduled for Thursday, after meetings with Trump in Davos.

In addition, according to the publication, a meeting of national security advisors of Western countries was held in Davos, which was initially called to discuss Ukraine, but in the end the focus shifted to Greenland.

The meeting of the finance ministers of the Eurozone in Brussels will also be devoted to the discussion of the crisis, the publication said.

At the same time, there are those in the EU who are optimistic and believe that Trump has made empty threats before, and that Europe has experienced similar moments over the past year, but in the end found a way to force him to back down.

In particular, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Maloni, who spoke with Trump the day before, said that he was “interested in listening” to a possible compromise.

Prehistory:

  • On January 17, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of tariffs against a number of countries that do not agree with his claims to Greenland.
  • Before that, Denmark sent military equipment and an advanced detachment of troops to Greenland in preparation for receiving larger forces of the army and other allied units for military exercises. Several countries also sent their troops.
  • The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, defended the position of European countries in support of Denmark and Greenland and warned about the negative consequences of Donald Trump’s decisions on tariffs.
