“Barbie, Mercy, Sultan and Dobrynya are not characters from a fairy tale, but real names of little Ukrainians! In 2024, more than 176,000 newborns received unique names that became a symbol of their parents’ love, hopes and expectations. It is interesting that popular names such as Sofia or Artem remain at the top of the ratings for several years in a row,” the Ministry of Justice said.
The most popular female names, as reported, were Anna, Sofia, Maria, Kateryna, Solomiya, Polina, Victoria and Milana. Artem, Maksym, Bohdan, Dmytro, Mykhailo, Andriy, Denys, Danylo, Timofey, Makar and Mark are leading among male names.
Interestingly, along with traditional names, parents increasingly choose unique options.
Among the unusual female names are Barbie, Mercy, Dzvinka, Yangolya, Ruta, Horynya, Jasmin, Roksolana, Vasilisa, Olympiada, Luna, Kvitka, Sulamita, Malva and Doyana. The boys are called Panteleimon, Solomon, Tamerlan, Aeneas, Svyatogor, Arnold, Elisey, Dobrynya, Zoreslav, Zorovavel, Yair, Severin, Askold and Sultan.
At the same time, the Ministry of Justice recalled that according to Ukrainian legislation, an individual who has reached the age of 14 has the right to change his surname and (or) his first name, and (or) his patronymic with the consent of his parents or guardian. And from the age of 16, she can change them at her own discretion.
