On March 13, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited France, where he held a bilateral meeting with President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace. The discussions highlighted France’s ongoing support for Ukraine’s European integration and energy security amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Macron expressed France’s commitment to Ukraine’s path toward European Union membership, acknowledging the reforms undertaken by the Ukrainian government. He stated,
“Much has already been accomplished, which is impressive. Ukraine deserves the opening of the first block of negotiation chapters, and I have no doubt we will achieve this, despite artificial obstacles that have arisen, and we will accompany this path.”
In terms of energy support, Macron emphasized that France would remain fully mobilized, particularly in its capacity as the G7 presidency. He mentioned the need for a strategy to protect Ukraine’s energy infrastructure from Russian attacks. Macron noted,
“Since January, we have supplied a significant amount of equipment to Ukraine. We have also agreed on an effective position within the G7 regarding this issue. In addition to all this, there is, of course, military support that we will continue to provide.”
Macron also addressed the need for increased pressure on Russia to bring an end to the war. He asserted that the French government is determined to intensify efforts to compel Moscow to engage in negotiations
“in good faith.”
He added,
“A lot has been accomplished through sanctions… We will continue this work, preparing the 20th package of sanctions, and we will also maintain efforts against all forms of circumvention of restrictions and combat the shadow fleet of Russia that supports its military efforts.”
The meeting underscored the ongoing diplomatic and military collaboration between France and Ukraine as the latter continues to navigate the challenges posed by the conflict with Russia.
