Former EU diplomat Mogherini has resigned after allegations of fraud

The former chief diplomat of the European Union, Federica Mogherini, who was accused of fraud at the beginning of the week, resigned from the post of rector of the College of Europe.

Details: Mogherini was detained on Tuesday, December 2, in connection with an investigation into whether a public tender to select a higher education institution to host the EU’s Diplomatic Academy was rigged in favor of the College of Europe.

On Thursday, December 4, against the background of these events, she resigned.

“According to the highest rigor and justice with which I have always performed my duties, today I have decided to resign from the post of rector,” Mogherini said.

The statement came a day after the former Secretary-General of the European External Action Service and Director-General of the EU Department for the Middle East, North Africa and the Persian Gulf, Stefano Sannino, announced that will retire after he was detained as part of a fraud investigation.

Last year, Sannino also lectured at the College of Europe and the Diplomatic Academy of the EU.
