For the second year in a row, biologists find the first egg in the same place, told at the National Antarctic Science Center.
The “find” was discovered by Zoya Shvydka, a biologist of the 30th Ukrainian expedition, when she went around the island of Galindez.
“I noticed that some penguins were lying down and didn’t get up – they became “suspicious”. I decided to come closer – it turned out not for nothing. One penguin really already has an egg.”– said the polar explorer.
For the second time in a row, the first egg of the year is found on a rock near a small laboratory where geophysicists receive radio frequencies. Collected data scientists use to study the influence of solar activity and the Earth’s ionosphere and magnetosphere.
“This is one of the highest nesting points for penguins on the island. Thanks to the height, the rocks here are exposed from snow relatively early and become suitable for nesting. Maybe that’s why the first eggs appear here. Or maybe the penguins like to listen to signals from distant parts of the planet.” – jokes the biologist.
Galindez Island is home to subantarctic penguins, which usually lay their eggs in nests made of stones. Birds in a pair “share the responsibilities” of caring for the offspring – while the mother feeds in the ocean, the father remains to take care of the nest and vice versa.
Penguins near “Vernadskyi” usually lay two eggs each. Sometimes a couple has three eggs – under such conditions, the chick has little chance of survival, says the National Center for the Environment. At the same time, polar explorers visited Galindez last year followed behind a feathered family with three babies.
“We will definitely let you know if there are any interesting cases this year. We expect the first penguins in about a month.”– to assure the National Center for National Research and Development.
Last year, the first penguin eggs were laid on Galindez discovered a little later – at the beginning of November. This year to the station “Akademik Vernadskyi” for the marriage season returned almost seven thousand birds.
