The Prime Minister of Slovakia has stated that his country would “never support” this initiative in terms of gas supply, as it harms Slovak households, businesses and threatens the competitiveness of the entire EU.
According to the premiere of Slovakia, the European Commission, by promoting rePowreu, “rudely ignores the political mandate of the European Council.”
He also stressed that his position is “consistent and should not be a surprise”, although Slovakia is not vetoed for rePowreu.
Fitzo stressed that Bratislava considers this proposal as a “sanction” and associates it with the 18th package of EU sanctions against Russia. Therefore, he said, Slovakia expects that voting on a sanction package will only take place after the significant risks for gas supply are eliminated.
The Prime Minister also noted that Slovakia has no “minimal consensus” to support the European Commission, and business representatives have a “extremely negative opinion” about the initiative.
As a result, Fitzo urged von der Lien to use the coming hours and days to continue the dialogue with the Government of Slovakia, in particular for “a clear interpretation of the obligations of the European Commission.”
By this time, Bratislava will ask for a postponement of the voting on the 18th Package of Sanctions.
Recall that the 18th package of sanctions against Russia was one of the key topics of the EU Council meeting on July 15. EU’s main diplomat Kai Callas said that countries “very close” The agreement and expressed hope that the decision would be made today.
Prehistory:
- Slovakia still blocked new sanctions, demanding guarantees from the European Commission that it would not suffer losses after the EU’s complete refusal of Russian gas in 2028.
- Malta, as far as known, has its reservations to reduce the “price ceiling” into Russian oil.
