The training takes place in the camp, which is located near the city of Kokkola. The youngest of the women is 18 years old, and the oldest is 70. The group, in particular, learns to survive in crisis situations, including building and extinguishing fires, cooking outdoors, and providing first aid.
“I didn’t think that Russia could attack us,” says 42-year-old Sari, who works in sales. But then, she adds, “They attacked Ukraine. I realized that maybe we are next.”
The training course, known as “Nasta”, is one of 40 held by the Women’s National Association for Emergency Preparedness across Finland. Other courses include cyber security, psychological resilience, wilderness skills, snowmobiling, and information impact. After the invasion of Ukraine, the number of applications for courses increased dramatically.
