Finnish President Alexander Stubb has suggested that the United States should consider providing military assistance to Europe to enhance security in the Strait of Hormuz. In return, he believes the U.S. should bolster support for Ukraine to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
This proposal was made during a Q&A session at the Chatham House think tank in London, where Stubb noted that he had previously discussed similar ideas with U.S. President Donald Trump, who expressed support for the concept.
“I think this is indeed a good idea. (…) I have no illusions about who can convince President Trump of anything. If I can convey even one out of ten ideas regarding Ukraine to him, I would consider that a success,” Stubb remarked.
Stubb also expressed concerns that peace negotiations regarding Ukraine are approaching a critical juncture. He fears that Kyiv may be pressured into accepting a deal that could involve ceding territories currently under Russian occupation. He warned that the talks could collapse, leaving Europe without American support for Ukraine.
Additionally, the Finnish leader pointed out other adverse effects of the war in Iran on Ukraine, such as a shortage of air defense systems and the enrichment of Russia through oil revenues amid the current oil crisis.
“The Russian economy was in very poor shape a few weeks ago, but now it is recovering,” Stubb stated.
Earlier, EU Commissioner Kaja Kallas remarked that any easing of U.S. sanctions on Russian oil would set a “dangerous precedent.” She argued that the flow of funds to Russia should be curtailed rather than increased, as the country continues its military actions against Ukraine.
On March 12, the United States issued a 30-day license allowing the purchase of Russian oil and oil products that are currently stranded at sea. The U.S. Treasury Department believes this move will help stabilize global energy markets.
Previously, Trump announced plans to lift some sanctions related to oil in an effort to lower energy prices, which have surged amid U.S.-Israeli operations against Iran. However, he did not provide specific details on which countries would see sanctions lifted.
On March 6, the U.S. eased sanctions on Russian oil for India, allowing the country’s refineries to purchase stranded Russian oil from tankers.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb has proposed that the U.S. provide military support to Europe in exchange for increased aid to Ukraine. He expressed concerns about the potential outcomes of peace negotiations and the implications of the ongoing war in Iran on the conflict in Ukraine.
