Details: Farmers from the Coordination Rurale trade union have called for protests in Paris against the EU’s deal with the MERCOSUR bloc, which they say could flood the country with cheap food imports.

Farmers parked dozens of tractors under the Eiffel Tower and blocked some entrances to the city center, despite police bans.

The vote on the EU agreement with MERCOSUR is expected on Friday. The deal is backed by countries such as Germany and Spain, and the European Commission appears to have secured Italy’s backing, meaning it will have the votes it needs to approve the trade deal without French support.

Yesterday, the media reported that Italy gave the green light EU agreements with South American countries.

We will remind:

  • In December, the EU postponed the signing trade agreement with the countries of South America due to internal differences between the countries.
  • The EU agreement with MERCOSUR caused special manifestations of dissatisfaction in countries with a large and influential agricultural sector, especially in France and of Poland.
