Former informant of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Oleksandr Smirnov, was sentenced to six years in prison in the United States. He admitted to false testimony about the interaction of US President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden with the Ukrainian energy company Burisma.

Prosecutors asked the US District Judge in Los Angeles to sentence Smirnov to six years in prison. His lawyers sought a four-year sentence, arguing that Smirnov had taken responsibility and suffered a “personal collapse” as a result of the case.

Smirnov also admitted to tax evasion.

Last month, a former FBI informant who was one of the key witnesses in a congressional investigation into an alleged corruption scheme involving US President Joe Biden and his son Hunter, pleaded guilty to perjury.

Smirnov had been cooperating with the FBI for more than 10 years when he made sensational statements about the Biden family in June 2020. In particular, that US President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden each received five million dollars from the Ukrainian energy company Burisma. This happened after, according to the indictment, he expressed a biased attitude towards Joe Biden as a presidential candidate.

Republicans have found no evidence that Joe Biden acted with self-interest or took bribes while serving as vice president in Barack Obama’s administration.

Smirnov’s testimony played a significant role in the efforts of Republicans in Congress to investigate the actions of the president and his family, and also led to the beginning of the investigation to announce the impeachment of Joe Biden.

During a conversation with investigators in September 2023, Smirnov also stated that the Russians probably have recordings of Hunter Biden’s conversations, since the hotel in Kyiv where he allegedly stayed was “eavesdropped” and under the control of the Russian intelligence services – this information he received from four high-ranking Russian officials. However, according to the indictment, Hunter Biden never visited Ukraine.

Smirnov claimed he had been in contact with Russian intelligence officials and told authorities after his arrest this year that “officials associated with Russian intelligence were involved in spreading the story” about Biden Jr.

In February 2024, Oleksandr Smirnov was charged with lying to the FBI and creating false records. He was arrested on February 15 at the international airport in Las Vegas.
