Citing diplomats, The Wall Street Journal wrote that the other day, European leaders issued a stern warning to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky: do not give in to Russia’s demands without reliable security guarantees from the United States.

Details: As the publication writes, in particular, European leaders advised their Ukrainian counterpart to seek security guarantees for Kyiv from the US before accepting Russia’s demands, according to two European diplomats familiar with the negotiations.

The message came during a phone call Monday between Zelenskyi and European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, diplomats said.

European leaders insisted on the primary role of the US in the security guarantees offered to Ukraine in any agreement.

Concern is growing in Kyiv and other European capitals that Washington has not specified what it will do if Russia violates a potential peace deal and attacks Ukraine again.

These warnings, issued in recent days, are another example of attempts by European leaders to interfere in the peace talks that the United States is conducting, appealing directly to the Kremlin and Kyiv, largely without the participation of Europe.
