According to the publication, at least four points of the plan should be changed.
As noted, the Europeans disagree with the US proposals regarding distribution of the territory. It is assumed that Ukraine will completely give Russia strategically important areas, such as Donbas, as well as Crimea.
A proposal about reduction of the Ukrainian armywhich is already much smaller than the Russian one.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also wants to convey to Trump’s representatives that security guaranteeswhich Russia should provide to Ukraine, may not be worth the paper they are written on.
What particularly annoys Mertz are Trump’s plans for frozen Russian assets (to the amount of about 300 billion euros). Trump not only wants to direct 100 billion euros of American investments to Russia, of which the United States will receive a 50 percent share, but also to use these funds to create a new American-Russian investment mechanism.
Mertz was one of the leading advocates for the EU to use a significant part of these funds (€140 billion) to finance a large-scale loan for Ukraine.
Manfred Weber, head of the EPP faction in the European Parliament, also called for significant changes in the US peace plan: “These are historic hours. It is not about Ukraine, but about the security of all of us.”
“Everyone wants peace, but it should be lasting. There are three issues. First, Ukraine should be able to decide sovereignly whether it can cede territory; it should not be imposed on it. Second, Ukraine should be strengthened militarily, not weakened. And third, we should turn the EU into a European NATO. We can no longer rely unconditionally on the US,” he said.
What preceded: The leaders of European states and European institutions, and the countries that are part of the “Group of Seven” (except the USA) expressed their disagreement with part of the “peace plan” for Ukraine proposed by the United States, but agreed to take the project as a basis and expressed readiness for it joint refinement.
