Details: An unnamed European diplomat said the new effort, which echoes many of Russia’s maximalist demands made as far back as 2022, is reminiscent of the movie “Day of the Groundhog,” in which events are repeated over and over again.

The European envoy to Ukraine noted that this plan came as a complete surprise to the diplomatic community. “All this has already been considered and rejected, and now we have returned to the starting point,” the diplomat said.
“For Ukrainians, this is simply an unrealistic proposition, and there are good reasons for that. It will simply be an invitation for Russians to return again in the future. For any Ukrainian leader (accept her) will be political suicide, and the transfer of this fortified territory will be military suicide,” the interlocutor added.
The diplomat also said that the ministries of foreign affairs in Europe and other countries called their colleagues in Washington to get an explanation about the plan, but they were told that they did not know anything about it.
“We heard directly from State Department and Capitol Hill officials that no one knew about this plan until it leaked yesterday,” the diplomat said.
“People who should have known about him didn’t know anything about him… This is causing great irritation and confusion,” he added.
In her first public comments since reports of the plan surfaced, EU foreign policy chief Kaya Callas told reporters on Thursday that “for any plan to work, the support of Ukrainians and Europeans is necessary.”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday night that the document is “a list of potential ideas“, and not a complete sentence.
US officials have said that some parts of the US “peace plan” for Ukraine, which are being discussed in the media, not final and will “almost certainly” be changed.
