On Tuesday, she presented in Strasbourg a proposal to the commission to provide more resources to law enforcement agencies. According to the plan, by 2027 the staff of the permanent building will be 10 thousand people.
In general, the Frontex EU Border Guard is proposed to increase up to 30,000 people.
This strategy is currently only a broad plan, not a set of specific legislative proposals, but together with two other recent proposals for defense and readiness of the European Union, demonstrates that the EU is increasingly responsible for security.
The European Commission also called for more resources to the EU – Europol Police Department – and to entrust it to fight hybrid threats. In particular, they suggest that law enforcement agencies are more accessible to data.
The publication notes that these plans can alert privacy defenders. Journalists remind that the proposed EU legislation to combat sexual abuse materials on the Internet has long been pushed, since EU member states cannot agree on whether private messaging services such as WhatsApp and Signal should be transmitted to the police.
Any attempt to do the same with the help of other legal mechanisms may face similar problems, although Virkcunen insists that the private life of people will be protected.
