They emphasized that territorial integrity and sovereignty are fundamental principles of international law that are important for Europe and the international community as a whole.
Literally: “We constantly emphasize our shared transatlantic interest in peace and security in the Arctic, particularly through NATO. The pre-coordinated Danish exercises, conducted together with allies, meet the need to strengthen security in the Arctic and do not pose a threat to either side.
The EU stands in full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland. Dialogue remains extremely important, and we are committed to building on the process launched last week between the Kingdom of Denmark and the United States.
The imposition of tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations and create the risk of a dangerous downward spiral. Europe will remain united, coordinated and committed to protecting its sovereignty.”
What preceded: US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced the introduction of tariffs from February 1 against a number of countries that do not agree with his position on Greenland.
According to him, from February 1, 2026, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland will be subject to a 10% tariff on all goods exported to the United States. From June 1, 2026, the tariff will be increased to 25%.
French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called US President Donald Trump’s threats to impose tariffs against their countries that do not support his position on Greenland unacceptable and wrong.
