“EU also works on legal options that will break existing gas supply contracts with Russia without penalties”, – WRITE: www.radiosvoboda.org
As some EU member states have promised to block any EU sanctions on Russian gas, the European Commission instead considers other tools that can accelerate the end of Europe’s dependence on Russian energy. She plans to publish options for this in the Road Map, which should be published on May 6.
The European Commission is considering options that can prohibit European companies to enter into new contracts on Russian fuel, said an official who wished to remain anonymous.
The ban on the conclusion of new contracts is aimed at reducing spot purchases by European companies of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG). Although the supply of Russian pipeline gas decreased sharply after the full -scale invasion of Moscow into Ukraine in 2022, the EU increased the import of Russian LNG last year.
As reported in December by Financial Times, the import of Russian liquefied natural gas to the EU in 2024 reached a record level, despite the efforts of the block to reduce gas dependence on this country after the full -scale war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.
