Details: “COREPER I confirmed the agreement on the final compromise text and will now, as usual, inform the European Parliament about it,” the spokesman said.
Next, the European Parliament will vote on the decision – most likely, the vote will take place at the beginning of 2026. The plans will then be approved by the EU Council.
The ambassadors reached a decision after the Presidency of the Council of the EU and interlocutors of the European Parliament reached a preliminary agreement December 3.
According to the agreed proposal, the text of which is at the disposal of “European Truth”, the EU will stop importing Russian LNG until April 25, 2026 for short-term contracts and until January 1, 2027 – for long-term contracts.
Regarding the cessation of pipeline gas imports, the ban will take effect on June 17, 2026 for short-term contracts. For long-term contracts, the deadline is set for September 30, 2027, as long as Member States meet the storage targets.
If this does not happen, the ban will take effect one month later, on November 1, 2027.
The agreed decision also highlights the need for more careful import controls in cases where the risk of circumvention is high.
Last week, the head of the EU’s foreign policy service, Kaya Callas, said that the agreement “will put an end to Moscow’s energy blackmail and help deprive it of the revenues that fuel its war.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the EU plans to completely abandon fossil fuels from Russia will inevitably lead to negative consequences for the European economy.
The EU assured that will not return to energy carriers from the Russian Federation even after the end of the war.
