Dutch Dominance in Speed Skating at the 2026 Winter Olympics

The speed skating events at the 2026 Winter Olympics concluded in Milan, where athletes competed from February 7 to 21 for a total of 14 medal sets across men’s and women’s categories.

The Netherlands emerged as the standout nation, securing five gold medals, including victories on the final day of competition. Jorrit Bergsma claimed gold in the men’s mass start, while Marijke Groenewoud triumphed in the women’s event.

Each of the five gold medals was won by different Dutch skaters, predominantly in women’s events.

Champions from the Netherlands in Speed Skating at the 2026 Olympics:

  • Men’s Mass Start: Jorrit Bergsma
  • Women’s 500m: Femke Kok
  • Women’s 1000m: Jutta Leerdam

Speed skating has been part of the Winter Olympic program since 1924. The Netherlands has consistently excelled in this discipline, marking its eighth overall victory in the medal standings.

This marks the fourth consecutive Olympics in which the Dutch team has finished first among speed skaters, a feat previously achieved only by Norway (1936-1952) and the Soviet Union (1956-1964).

Historically, the Netherlands has secured at least five gold medals in speed skating at each of the last five Olympic Games. However, there has been a gradual decline in their total gold count, dropping from eight in 2014 to seven in 2018, despite an increase in the number of events from 12 to 14.

Italy contributed three gold medals on home ice in Milan, with Francesca Lollobrigida winning in both the women’s 3000m and 5000m, alongside the men’s team pursuit.
