Armenia is strengthening its relations with Western partners against the backdrop of deteriorating relations with the Russian Federation. the Kremlin reacts to Yerevan’s new course with threats and pressure. This is reported by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), writes UNN.

The report recalled that on January 14, Armenia and the United States established the Strategic Partnership Commission, which became an important step in bilateral relations.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan formalized an agreement aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation in the economic, security, defense and management spheres.

Blinken stated the support of the USA for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Armenia.

It is noted that Kremlin spokesman Dmytro Peskov criticized the partnership agreement, accusing the US of destabilizing the situation in the South Caucasus.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Overchuk and Minister of Foreign Affairs Serhiy Lavrov also expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that the Armenian government approved the draft law on accession to the European Union (EU) on January 9.

Both have argued that Armenia’s potential future EU membership is incompatible with Armenia’s membership in the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) and view Armenia’s EU accession bill as a potential exit from the EEU.

Overchuk and Lavrov also stated that such decisions are the sovereign right of Armenia. However, they emphasized the potential consequences, reinforcing the Kremlin’s long-standing practice of threatening and pressuring neighboring countries through indirect and direct means.

The Kremlin’s reaction to Armenia’s deepening ties with the West demonstrates a broader Russian strategy of undermining the sovereignty of neighboring and formerly colonized countries. Initial ultimatums and veiled coercion often escalate into direct action and military violence when Russian influence is challenged, as happened in Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine
