Intense terrorist attacks by the Russian Federation on Ukrainian cities were accompanied by an extremely harsh winter, which has not been observed in Ukraine for a long time. A perfect storm emerged that covered millions of our compatriots.
Of course, enemy soldiers could not help but mention the notorious “General Moroz”. Like, in 2026, this sacred character came to the aid of the Russians again – like in 1812 or 1941.
True, the abnormal cold did not give the Kremlin any advantages at the front; but only facilitated targeted terror against the civilian population and the creation of a humanitarian crisis in the Ukrainian rear.

But, as you know, moral and ethical problems in Russia have long ceased to concern anyone. The enemy does not just lose his human form, but openly flaunts it.
If we look at the situation in a purely practical way, then it is not only about General Moroza. The most telling thing is that another military leader, on whom we relied for a long time, turned away from Ukraine – General Fart.
At the beginning of 2026, our enemy was helped by circumstances that do not depend on either Moscow or Kyiv. We were really unlucky this time. And, unfortunately, the country, which survived almost four years of the great war, was not ready for real bad luck.
“The historian hates to admit this, but fart – very important factor” – Paul Johnson, author of the bestseller “Modern Times: History of the World from the 1920s to 1980s”, once remarked.
There are more than enough examples of this in world military history. Thus, in 1274 and 1281, a typhoon nicknamed the “divine wind” (“kamikaze”) twice saved Japan from the invasion of a large Mongol fleet.
In 1415, torrential rain practically paralyzed the knightly cavalry and contributed to the defeat of the French at Agincourt, the key battle of the Hundred Years’ War.
In 1588, storms off the coast of Scotland caused irreparable damage to the Spanish “Invincible Armada” and undermined the naval power of Madrid.
In 1761, the death of Empress Elizaveta Petrovna prevented the almost inevitable defeat of Prussia in the Seven Years’ War: the new emperor Peter III was an ardent admirer of all things Prussian and turned Petersburg’s policy 180 degrees.
In 1815, an untimely attack of hemorrhoids prevented Napoleon Bonaparte from sitting in the saddle for a long time and effectively commanding the troops at the Battle of Waterloo.
And in 1942, American bombers near Midway Atoll were lucky enough to jump Japanese aircraft carriers at the perfect moment – during the rearming and refueling of aircraft, when the enemy was most vulnerable. And this battle became a turning point in the Pacific theater of military operations.
Of course, the role of elemental luck or failure during the existential war is not recognized by everyone. Someone prefers to interpret blind chance as a deliberate intervention of higher powers (“God is for us”, “truth is with us”, etc.).
However, millions of Ukrainians hope for military fortune, luck, and a fart.
And in the dugouts on the front line, and in the deep rear, and on the Pechersk hills: the top political leadership is also not alien to anything human.
Zelensky’s presidential term was marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, and then by a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. However, in extreme historical conditions, the head of state gained the reputation of a lucky person. Supporters of Volodymyr Oleksandrovich, more neutral observers, and even implacable opponents have repeatedly spoken about this.
“The first year of the presidency showed that Zelenskyy is a fart boy”, – emphasized political scientist Andrii Zolotaryov in the spring of 2020.
“The plus is that he is a fart. He is really lucky”– claimed People’s Deputy Serhii Rakhmanin in 2021.
“You have to admit. Zelensky, as they say, is a fart. He is incredibly lucky.” – such a statement was made in the fall of 2022 by blogger and military serviceman Dmytro Vovnyanko, who strongly dislikes the current president.
5-6 years ago, luck seemed to be a factor that compensated for the lack of political experience and a highly professional team. And after February 24, 2022, success helped compensate for the initial disparity of forces in the confrontation with the Russian aggressor.
Sometimes Ukraine was really lucky. Three mild and warm winters during the war became one of the characteristic examples. And every such precedent made many Ukrainians believe that General Fart is fighting on our side and that he will not leave us in a difficult moment.
In part, this faith explains why in Kyiv they did not give up the maximalist concept of victory and the hope of liberating all occupied Ukrainian territories for so long. Although it was difficult to count on it after 2023.
The fact is that General Fart is not Valery Zaluzhnyi and not Oleksandr Syrskyi. Nothing is impossible for him. He knows how to win without having enough resources. He is able to completely crush a strong opponent thanks to a successful coincidence of circumstances. And purely theoretically, there is always such a chance.
General Fart allows the war to be waged without a long-term strategy and without a clear plan of action. It is enough to improvise, hold the defense, buy time and wait for the circumstances to be as favorable as possible for us. Waiting for the arrival of friendly “black swans” who will do for Ukraine what we cannot do ourselves.
And General Fart teaches us to hope for the best, but not to prepare for the worst. They quickly get used to luck and relax.
If gloomy scenarios can be avoided for a long time, it seems to us that this will continue to be the case.
If Ukraine was lucky three winters in a row, then, most likely, it will be lucky for the fourth. And if so, is it worth spending a lot of time, money and effort on preparing for a pessimistic development of events? Unfortunately, this way of thinking was widespread in society. And not only among reckless ordinary people, but also among high-ranking officials.
In short, at the height of the war, Ukraine relied on luck more than it was ready to admit. And much more than it’s worth.
Too many of our compatriots did not take into account that General Farth is an ally, ready at any moment to turn into the fiercest enemy.
He saves and corrupts at the same time. Saves and at the same time disarms. Replaces sober and cold-blooded calculation with attractive hope. And then gives you a treacherous blow in the back – and takes you by surprise.
This winter, we were fully convinced of this. The country had to struggle, fight and survive without the gifts of fate. And console yourself with the fact that the experience of survival against the odds is valued more than successes born of blind luck.
