Details: According to human rights defenders, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation intimidates 18-year-old conscripts, deceives job applicants and forces people under investigation to sign contracts.
One of the ways to attract people to the armed forces is false vacancies, in the description of which it is not indicated that it is about military service. Men are tricked into joining military units, offering jobs that are supposedly not related to military operations: for example, a job as an engineer assembling drones.
The direct speech of Ivan Chuvilyaev, representative of the project “Walk in the Forest”: “People are told: everything will be fine, everything will be fine, don’t worry. And then, instead of an employment contract, a contract with the Ministry of Defense is presented. And if a person signs it, that’s all, he goes to the front.”
The second method used by the Ministry of Defense is the recruitment of prisoners, people who are under investigation and those whose cases are being considered in court. The security forces force these people to sign a contract with the Ministry of Defense under the threat of opening a new criminal case, or on the contrary, they promise to remove their criminal record.
The third method of recruitment is luring residents of regions bordering Ukraine into volunteer units of the BARS. Formally and verbally, the units “BARS-Kursk”, “BARS-Belhorod” and “BARS-Bryansk” were created to help local authorities: help with evacuation, guard checkpoints, bridges and other objects, fight drones and sabotage and intelligence groups . But in fact, those willing sign not some separate labor contract, but a standard contract from the Ministry of Defense, according to the terms of which all the people who signed it can be sent to the assault or to the part of the front where it is most relevant.
The fourth way of increasing the number of contract workers is deception, pressure and intimidation of conscript soldiers. According to human rights defenders, conscripts are threatened with being sent to the hottest spots or that they will be mobilized in any case and promised that if they sign contracts, they will be able to earn and save their lives.
