The main target of the attack was the transshipment complex “Sheskharis”, which is a key object of the energy infrastructure of the Russian state company “Transneft”.
The “Sheskharis” oil terminal is the end point of main oil pipelines that transport a significant part of Russian export oil, in particular the Urals grade.
Together with the nearby terminal of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, through which mainly Kazakh oil passes, the port of Novorossiysk handles the shipment of more than 2 million barrels of oil per day, which is about 5% of the global maritime supply.
Against the background of the attack, airports in the neighboring cities of Krasnodar and Gelendzhik were temporarily suspended.
In addition to the damage to the oil terminal, it is reported that an ammunition warehouse was hit in the territory of one of the military units, as well as in the position of air defense systems.
Prehistory:
- On September 24, the Russian authorities reported about the drone attack on the city of Novorossiysk in the Krasnodar Territory, where one of the Russian naval bases in the Black Sea is located.
