Dmitriev agreed with Witkoff to pass off the Russian “peace plan” as his own – Bloomberg

Assistant to the ruler of Russia, Yuriy Ushakov, and the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, Kirill Dmitriev, discussed the scheme of transferring the Russian “peace plan” project to Donald Trump’s team, with the goal that the Americans would present these ideas as their own initiative.

Details: The agency published the content of the conversation between Ushakov and Dmitriev, which took place on October 29. Russian officials discussed handing over the document to Steve Witkoff, a longtime friend of Donald Trump and the US president’s special envoy for Russia.

According to the Kremlin’s plan, Witkoff was to receive the Russian draft of the agreements and pass it off as his own plan for settling the war in Ukraine.

During the conversation, Dmitriev offered to transfer the document “informally” so that the American side could present it as its own development. At the same time, he expressed hope that the text will remain “as close as possible” to the Russian original.

Dmitriev’s direct speech: “It seems to me that this is the paper, we’ll just do it in our position and I’ll just informally and directly convey that it’s all informal. And let them do theirs. But I think that they won’t exactly take our version, but at least as close as possible to it.”

Details: Ushakov expressed fears about such a scheme. A Putin aide worried that Witkoff could change the content of the plan and then say that those changes were agreed with Moscow, leading to a misinterpretation of Russian demands.

Ushakov’s direct speech: “Well, the thing is that they may not take it, but will say that it was agreed with us. That’s what I’m afraid of… They can change everything later. Well, there is such a danger.”

Details: In response, Dmitriev assured Ushakov that he would ask Witkoff to keep the wording “word for word” and that everything would be done “neatly.” He also noted that Ushakov will be able to personally discuss this document with Witkoff later.

It turned out that the American side, having received the Russian document, probably did not even try to make a high-quality translation. The text was simply run through an automatic translator.

We will remind, previously the British edition The Guardian conducted a linguistic examination of the mentioned “peace plan”. Experts have found a number of obvious Russianisms in the text, which are uncharacteristic of English speakers.

In particular, the document was full of passive grammatical constructions, which are a characteristic feature of the Russian official business style, but are extremely rarely used in English to such an extent. The released records confirmed suspicions that the so-called “Trump plan” was actually written in Moscow and translated verbatim.

In addition, a group of US senators heard from Secretary of State Marco Rubio that “Trump’s peace plan” was written by the Russians.

According to them, during the conversation, Rubio called the “peace plan” a “Russian proposal” and not a US initiative.

At the same time, after these statements, Rubio himself wrote on the X social network that “a peaceful proposal was developed by the USA“.
