Representatives of generations X and Y are prone to a greater risk of developing 17 types of cancer
A new study by the American Cancer Society shows alarming results: Generation X and millennials (generation Y) are prone to a greater risk of developing a number of types of cancer, compared to representatives of an older age. This is consistent with growing evidence that some cancers, particularly bowel, breast and pancreatic cancers, are increasingly being diagnosed in younger people.
The authors of this new study examined data on nearly 24 million cancer patients collected over 20 years, beginning in 2000. The researchers sorted the data by type of cancer, gender of participants and age cohorts, each covering a five-year range. They also made a statistical adjustment to account for the fact that each person’s chance of developing cancer increases as they age.
After analyzing the indicators of the 34 most common types of cancer (that is, those that were diagnosed at least 200,000 times over these two decades), the researchers presented the most comprehensive evidence to date of how the picture of the prevalence of oncological diseases is changing – how many people got sick, when and why.
