It is noted that the document was adopted despite the resistance of the delegation of the aggressor country. The representative of Russia tried to introduce his amendments, threatening not to support the agreed text.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Serhiy Vershinin proposed an amendment to “principle of non-intervention’, arguing that it is important for the countries of the Global South to avoid the imposition of will “of the collective West”
Vershinin named the draft document “hypocritical” and accused UN Secretary General António Guterres of ignoring Russia’s proposals. In case of rejection of the amendment of the Russian Federation, Vershinin threatened “distance yourself” from the consensus adoption of the document.
However, the Russian amendments were rejected by 143 votes. The President of the General Assembly, Philemon Young, declared the Pact approved and signed it.
What the Pact for the Future includes
The 42-page document lists countries’ intentions to address global issues such as military conflicts, climate change, artificial intelligence, and reforming the UN and global institutions.
In particular, the document covers chapters “Sustainable Development and Development Financing,” “International Peace and Security,” “Science, Technology, Innovation, and Digital Cooperation,” “Youth and Future Generations,” “Science, Technology, Innovation, and Digital Cooperation,” “Youth and Future Generations”
In the chapter devoted to peace and security, it is emphasized that “the calamities of war take on new and more dangerous forms.” It is also emphasized that “the world is now closer to nuclear confrontation than at any time since the end of the Cold War.”
The document obliges countries to act “collectively to maintain and restore international peace and security on land, at sea, in space, in cyberspace and other new areas,” which is necessary for “to more effectively counter interrelated global threats and fulfill the promises contained in the UN Charter.”
