– What is the situation with the Deryugin school now?
– I am in Uzhgorod, and we soon go to the World Cup. There is no news at this time. I know that the October Palace is planned to transfer a certain organization, with part of the building should go to school, but the terms of such transfer were not subject to discussion. Therefore, this question remains open.
– Tell us a little about Onofriachuk. She shone very brightly, won almost everything. How did she succeed?
– You know, this child has just phenomenal hard work. Many talented children, but not everyone work and like to perform so much. You need to want to perform, love it and try very hard. And she has it. She is very fond of performing, very fond of the public.
She is a very bold girl. We have been waiting for 28 years in such a result to be the first at the European Championship. This year she became a champion. By and large, she and at the Olympic Games conquered everyone, but then there was not enough experience. We need to take an example from other countries. You will go to any European city high-quality hotels, halls, everything is. They do for people and let there even without money. Everything is done for people. Of course, the country’s leadership is thinking about peace, but we all live, sports shows that Ukraine lives. So, you can do something for him, I mean infrastructure.
I understand that something will be built today, and tomorrow it will be broken. But I want a special program to be adopted after peace. Because sports should be an important factor for the formation of Ukrainian identity. Therefore, something needs to be done for sports. I dream of a time when there will be mugs, sports and more in kindergartens. This is not present today.
Believe me, today gymnastics in all regions is developing as much as possible. There are problems with other sports. And I am proud that gymnastics also helps to strengthen the ties of Ukrainians with Ukraine, regardless of where they are now.
– Tell us a little about the situation with men’s gymnastics, about the conflict between Zakharova and Vernayev. What is your position?
-Literally the other day I was called for a fee of a women’s gymnastics team, they are preparing in Koncha Zaspa for the World Cups. At the same time, Oleg Vernyaev wants during the meeting for preparation for the Cups of the World and the Olympic Games, to hold the Kyiv City Championship on this base, which can disrupt training. This is not acceptable. Stella does not allow this, and I too. It is not possible.
We have dealt with this issue for half a day, because it is not right. The hall was paid, there is a workout. Competitions cannot be held there. And a person does not want to spend it in another hall, he wants to do the way he wants, and it raises negative questions.
As for Vernyaev himself, he does not go to training, as I was told, recovers after the Olympic Games. He was in poor condition at the European Championship.
If you get a salary, you are in the national team, then you have to go to workout. You may have a different mode of work, but you have to train. A person who has not been trained for months cannot go to the World Cup and speak. Stella Zakharova fights to prevent such a situation.
There was also an unforeseen situation when a men’s gymnastics team went to the European Championship, and suddenly the German gymnastics federation sends me an account for the Federation to pay it. There was a violation of ethical behavior, scandal, was a problem.

They do not understand how to behave and not comply with the norms of ethical behavior, especially on the part of the athlete of international level. That is, the question is not whether he paid or not, but in how it influenced the reputation of the gymnastic community of Ukraine. I hoped that the trainer of Sartinsky would intervene in this situation and would give an appropriate assessment of Oleg Vernyaev’s actions, but this did not happen.
And now I fight that there are never such cases. Zakharova has no problems with women’s sports gymnastics. Everything is well there, and men still have a question for discipline. And we fight to establish discipline.
I personally have such improper behavior on the part of a prominent Ukrainian gymnast. The Ministry of Sports emphasizes that it is the head coach that should draw appropriate conclusions in the event of such an incident. I think otherwise.
There is a trainer who must comply with the requirements set by the National and International Federations. For athletes, the coach should be an example, show high standards and influence the situation, preventing athletes from breaching the rules or disgraced by the reputation of Ukrainian gymnastics. This should be the basis for youth education and to be carried out on the principles of ethical behavior. After all, looking at Ukrainian athletes, the world forms an idea of Ukraine.
I very much want to see what young people are preparing for a men’s gymnastics team, taking into account the values that are characteristic of Ukrainian athletes. It is because of such demands of the athletes that a conflict arose that some try to present as a common misunderstanding between the members of the Federation.
But the essence of the conflict is much deeper and more serious – it is a matter of strategic development of Ukrainian gymnastics both in terms of sports training and from the standpoint of patriotic education, the basis of which is the moral qualities of the athlete.
