Details: In Romny, the Norwegian organization Norsk Folkehjelp and the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) have created a training base for sapper dogs and dog handlers.
Starting in 2022, the training center professionalized and systematized the work of providing dogs and dog handlers with the best conditions for participation in demining. In December, the Norwegian government announced that support for Norsk Folkehjelp’s work in Ukraine will be increased by NOK 164 million by 2025.
“Mines do not discriminate between combatants and civilians. Clearance of mines and explosive devices saves lives here and now, but it also saves future generations from maiming and killing civilians.
Norsk Folkehjelp has many years of experience in demining, and their efforts are an important contribution to ensuring a safe future for the Ukrainian people,” said Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Bart Eide.
The Norwegian government noted that Norsk Folkehjelp has become one of 69 certified international partners that provide assistance in demining. Norsk Folkehjelp’s efforts include the training of 14 mine-detection dogs and the development of Ukraine’s potential in demining with the help of dogs.
What happened before:
- In December, it became known that Norway is allocating another NOK 2.7 billion (about $242.38 million) to strengthen Ukraine’s maritime defenses.
- At the end of November, parties in the Norwegian parliament supported the decision to increase support to Ukraine to NOK 35 billion in 2025.
