Details
A document dated 2019 on behalf of US Senator Tom Cotton allegedly called for fundraising for a referendum on Greenlandic independence. The letter was aimed at undermining trust between the countries and destabilizing their relations.
The investigation showed that the Russian Federation probably wanted to take advantage of the interest of then US President Donald Trump in the acquisition of Greenland, which was discussed in 2019. In the same year, Trump stated that the island is of strategic importance to the United States because of its location and natural resources.
This incident was another attempt by the Kremlin to influence international politics through information manipulation, according to the conclusions of Danish intelligence.
Moscow denied its involvement in the forgery, sending a response to Reuters. However, Western experts consider this case to be part of a wider disinformation campaign by the aggressor country.
We will remind
Greenland is an autonomous part of Denmark and has significant strategic importance due to its natural wealth and the US military base on the island.
