“This is the largest environmental loss recorded in Europe in modern history,” the agency said on December 4.
According to the calculations of the State Inspectorate, the total amount of losses includes:
- UAH 1.29 trillion – soil damage;
- UAH 967 billion – damage to atmospheric air;
- UAH 117.8 billion – pollution and clogging of water resources;
- UAH 3.63 trillion – destruction of the territories of the nature reserve fund.
“At the end of 2024, environmental damages from a full-scale war amounted to 2.78 trillion hryvnias, and today they already exceed 6 trillion. This number, unfortunately, continues to grow every day, as well as the scale of the destruction of Ukrainian nature. The ecological damage caused by Russia is measured not only in trillions of hryvnias – it will take decades to restore the destroyed ecosystems. And the scale of ecological destruction will reach far beyond the borders of Ukraine,” said Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine Ihor Zubovych.
The Ministry of Economy notes that 6.01 trillion hryvnias are only confirmed losses in territories controlled by Ukraine, and the final scale of environmental damage will be known after complete de-occupation and the opportunity to conduct a full investigation.
