Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney does not exclude the presence of military in Ukraine as part of security guarantees.

“We work with our allies and a coalition of those who want, with Ukraine on the conditions of these guarantees of safety on earth, in the sky and at sea. And I would not exclude the presence of the military, ”Karney said during a press conference with President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky.

According to him, the modality of safety guarantees is discussed, but it is not the choice of Russia as future sovereignty, Ukraine’s independence will be guaranteed, it is the choice of Ukraine and the decisions of partners.

Canada should provide $ 500 million for PURL (“List of Priority Needs of Ukraine”), NATO reported.

In his turn, Zelensky noted that Ukraine also expects that Canada will be actively involved in safety guarantees.

“It is important for everything to be as practical as possible and we believe that Canada should be presented at the same level as our closest partners in Europe – these security guarantees are involved in the Peace Process. We are counting on the presence of Canadian forces in Ukraine. It is important to us, ”the President added.

In July, the United States and NATO launched the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (Purl) initiative, which is aimed at providing rapid supply of systems to Ukraine and weapons that can be obtained from the United States. According to the Ukrainian side, as of August 14, PURL Ukraine already has $ 1.5 billion.

Security guarantees for Kiev are a key issue in the end of the war. Their discussion became more active after the meeting of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky with US President Donald Trump and European colleagues in Washington.

According to media reports, as part of the so-called coalition, the United Kingdom suggested that the Typhoon fighter jets in the west of Ukraine and a brigade from 3000-5000 servicemen to train the Ukrainian army. France, Canada and Australia could also send troops to the west of Ukraine. The Czech Republic could be part of peacekeeping forces in Ukraine, it was stated by President Peter Paul. Lithuania has also declared the willingness to provide peacekeeping troops for a possible mission in Ukraine.

European leaders have recently published a joint statement confirming that the peace agreement should not restrict the Armed Forces of Ukraine or its cooperation with third countries, as well as that Russia cannot veto Ukraine on the path of Ukraine to membership in the European Union or NATO.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on August 20 that any serious discussions on Western security guarantees for Ukraine without Russia’s participation are “through nowhere” and that Russia “cannot agree” with the fact that the “collective security issues” proposed now may be resolved without it. According to him, Russia stands for collective security guarantees, which are “truly reliable”, and that a good example of such guarantees was Istanbul talks between Ukraine and Russia in 2022, which would forever ban Ukraine to join NATO, would impose restrictions on the Ukrainian army and forbid Ukraine.
