Council of Europe Secretary General Allen Berce promises that Ukraine will be a key priority for the organization for the current year, and the CoE will not give way to Russia’s punishment.

Details: Presenting the priorities of the organization at a meeting of the Assembly, Berce emphasized the weight of the Ukrainian issue. “In 2025, Ukraine will be our highest priority,” he said, in particular.
He called the key to the involvement of Russia and its representatives for unlawful aggression against Ukraine and its consequences. In particular, the Secretary General has promised progress on compensation for damages of ordinary Ukrainians.
“We are striving to do everything possible to create a compensatory committee and a specific compensation mechanism that will be based on the success of the register of losses. The Council of Europe should play a leading role here. Expectations are high, and we have to answer them,” he said.
Separately, Berce emphasized that, despite the volatility of the international situation, the Council of Europe will not be retreating from the idea of personal punishment of Russian executives and continues to work on the creation of a special about the crime of aggression against Ukraine. “In addition to financial resources, it is very important to build a system of prosecution. There should be no impunity here,” he said.
Berce has already stated that he was counting on “Practical Steps” regarding a special offset in 2025.
