A convenient educational tool that provides thorough knowledge of international humanitarian law (IHL) for understanding the modern armed conflict.

A new online platform created to help military personnel acquire knowledge of international humanitarian law has been launched in Ukraine (IHL). This free educational initiative improves the understanding and application of IHL norms and principles and provides an opportunity to test the acquired knowledge with examples of real scenarios of behavior in combat.

ABOUT THE PLATFORM

The content component of the platform was developed by military practitioners with combat experience to explain the norms of IHL and their practical application on the battlefield.

The educational levels reveal in detail the provisions of the Geneva Conventions, legal aspects of military service, decision-making processes in complex combat situations, the responsibility of commanders, violations of IHL, war crimes, etc.

The training will be useful for military personnel without practical experience, first-time mobilized, military personnel of senior officers, media, volunteers, representatives of humanitarian organizations and in general, everyone who is interested in acquiring quality knowledge of IHL.

CURRICULUM AND METHODOLOGY

The platform offers 2 levels of training with 6 training modules each, which provide information in an interactive format in the form of various gamified tasks.

Soldier level explains what the idea of international humanitarian law is, who it protects, introduces the key principles of IHL and focuses on their practical application in combat situations. The level covers the provisions of the Geneva Conventions, the means and methods of warfare and the practical considerations that must guide soldiers in a combat environment (such as capturing enemy fighters, identifying targets for military attacks, etc.).

Officer level delves into the strategic implications of IHL, covers topics such as commanders’ responsibilities, planning and conducting military operations, decision-making processes in complex combat scenarios (such as handling prisoners of war, conducting offensive and defensive military operations, etc.).

Registration on the platform does not require providing personal mail or other personal data, you only need to come up with your nickname and password for login and further authorization.

All materials and assignments are available immediately after registration, so you can study at a comfortable pace and at a time that suits you. Training is available online in Ukrainian/English on all types of devices. If you do not have access to the Internet, you can pre-download materials to your profile and study them offline.
