Scientists have confirmed the fact that the physiological ability to regulate appetite, in particular through signals of the vagus nerve, depends not only on physiological processes, but also on socio-economic status.

New scientific research conducted by scientists from the UK highlights as physiological signals, in particular those transmitted through the wandering nerve, interact with socio-economic factors, affecting food behavior.

It was attended by 96 students from different socio-economic groups. In controlled laboratory conditions, each participant presented a plate with 70 tiles of milk chocolate and offered to tasting them at a convenient pace. During the experiment, the researchers measured the variability of cardiac rhythm as an indicator of the activity of the vagus nerve – part of the nervous system, which is responsible for regulating appetite and digestion.

The leading author of the study, Professor Mario Wyk of the Department of Psychology of the University of Darem, explained: “Although the wandering nerve plays a key role in the transmission of signals between the intestine and the brain, the degree to which these signals affect food behavior may depend on socio-economic status.”

According to him, in people with higher socio-economic status, internal signals are better correlated with food consumption, while in representatives of less privileged sections this relationship is weaker.

The study co -author, Professor Militsa Vasilyevich, adds:
“This does not mean that people with lower socio-economic status eat more or are more impulsive. Rather, it is said that internal regulation-the body’s natural signals for hunger and satiety-can function differently depending on the social background. “

The study challenges the traditional notion of food inequality that focused mainly on the availability of food and external conditions. At the same time, it emphasizes the role of biological mechanisms and their interaction with social circumstances.

In particular, participants from a more favorable chocolate consumption environment correlated with vagus nerve activity (which can signal both hunger and satiety). The participants, however, showed less dependence on these signals from less favorable conditions.

Despite the fact that the object of study was chocolate, the authors of the study believe that the conclusions obtained can be relevant to other products and diet models. Additional research is required to check these patterns in wider samples.

This work is an important step towards understanding the relationship between physiology, socio-economic status and eating habits. It opens new prospects for public health strategies aimed at overcoming food inequality.
