To ensure its presence around the islands, China used 550,000 ships and 6,000 aircraft.

In December 2025, the Chinese Coast Guard announced the expulsion of a Japanese fishing vessel that allegedly “illegally” entered Senkaku waters. Beijing once again emphasized that it considers these waters to be its territory.

At the same time, the Japanese Coast Guard reported that it was Japanese services that intercepted two Chinese ships that were trying to approach Japanese fishermen and forced them to leave Japan’s territorial waters.

What preceded:

  • The relations between the states intensified after the statement of the Prime Minister of Japan, Sanae Takaichi. She warnedthat Tokyo can respond to any military action by China against Taiwan if it poses a threat to Japanese national security.
  • In June, Japan announced the dangerous approach of Chinese fighter jets to a Japanese patrol plane near Okinawa.
  • In early December, Japan’s Defense Ministry said Chinese warplanes twice directed fire control radars at Japanese aircraft near Okinawa Prefecture.
