Details: According to the document, China has deployed more than 100 DF-31 solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missiles in mines near the border with Mongolia. These are the newest objects of this type. Previously, the US Ministry of Defense reported the existence of these mines, but did not specify the exact number of missiles placed in them.

The report notes that as of 2024, China’s nuclear arsenal numbered about 600 warheads. Although the pace of production has slowed somewhat compared to previous years, the overall upward trend continues. According to forecasts of the American military, by 2030, Beijing plans to have more than 1,000 nuclear warheads at its disposal.
The non-profit organization Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists confirms that China is modernizing and expanding its weapons stockpile faster than any other nuclear power.
Verbatim from the document: “We continue to see Beijing’s unwillingness to take action or engage in more comprehensive arms control negotiations.”
Details: A separate block of the report is devoted to the situation around Taiwan. Pentagon analysts claim that “China expects to be ready for a war with the island and win it by the end of 2027.”
One of the scenarios involves shelling the island from a distance of 1,500-2,000 nautical miles. The report notes that a large number of such strikes could “severely complicate and disrupt the US presence in the Asia-Pacific region,” a critical deterrent.
China’s embassy in Washington denied the accusations, saying China allegedly follows a “defensive nuclear strategy” and “keeps its forces to the minimum level necessary for national security and adheres to its nuclear test moratorium commitments.”
Prehistory:
- The draft report appeared against the background of US President Donald Trump’s statements about work on the denuclearization plan Russia and China.
- The report was presented less than two months before the expiration of the SNO-3 treaty (on strategic offensive weapons). This is the last valid agreement between the US and Russia, which limits the nuclear arsenals of the parties (up to 1,550 warheads). The contract was extended by former US President Joe Biden and Russian ruler Vladimir Putin in 2021 for five years, and its terms do not provide for further extension.
- Experts fear that after the agreement expires in February 2026, an uncontrolled three-way nuclear arms race may begin.
