On Monday, October 14, China began military training exercises near Taiwan. The Joint Sword-2024B exercises will take place in the Taiwan Strait and in areas north, south and east of Taiwan.
This is reported by Reuters.
“The exercise also serves as a stern warning against separatist actions by pro-Taiwan independence forces. This is a legal and necessary operation to protect state sovereignty and national unity,” the command of China’s Eastern theater of operations said in a statement.
As Reuters points out, Beijing has not announced a date for the end of the exercises, prompting condemnation from the Taipei government.
The Chinese military has released a map showing nine training areas around Taiwan: two on the island’s east coast, three on the west, one in the north and three near Taiwan-controlled islands off the Chinese coast.
Aggravation of relations between China and Taiwan: what is known
On December 27, 2023, Chinese leader Xi Jinping declared that China’s “reunification” with Taiwan was “inevitable.” He added that “this is the main national interest, and this is what the people want,” and in his New Year’s address to the people, he noted that China “will undoubtedly be reunited.”
Tensions around Taiwan became one of the topics of conversation at the November 15 meeting between US and Chinese leaders Joe Biden and Xi Jinping.

On January 13, pro-Western candidate Lai Tsingde, who supports the island’s independence, won the presidential election in Taiwan.
On January 25, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian said that Taiwan “will never be an independent state.”
