The Paper reports that by the end of this decade, the country will be ahead of the United States and will become a world leader in nuclear energy production. New 10 reactors will cost about 200 billion yuan (about $ 27 billion).
Four reactors will be built by China General Nuclear Power Corp. At their sites in Fanchengan and Taishan. Two more reactors will erect China National Nuclear Corp, State Power Investment Corp. and China Huaneng Group Co.
According to China’s Nuclear Energy Association, China’s nuclear power will increase to 65 power gigawatts by less than 60 gigawatts last year. And by 2040, this figure should reach 200 gigawatts, which will be about 10% of the country’s total electricity.
Bloomberg noted that in order to fulfill these ambitious plans, China needs to control costs. The cost of one new reactor – $ 2.7 billion – is much lower than in the US or Europe, where the projects are often delayed and rise.
The publication emphasized that the advantage of China is that government banks provide cheap loans to companies that build nuclear power plants, which can significantly reduce costs at the construction stage.
