Schroth, 35, headed Mertz’s office when he was leader of the CDU/CSU minority parliamentary faction and was a key ally in the chancellor’s rise to power. He had close contacts with the administration of US President Donald Trump.
In addition, Schroth led the newly created Mertz National Security Council, which was created to coordinate Germany’s foreign and defense policy.
Philipp Birkenmeier, currently head of the Christian Democratic Union party, will take over as the chancellor’s chief of staff. A new chairman of the National Security Council has not yet been appointed.
At the beginning of December, Merz secured in the Bundestag the absolute majorityfor the pensions bill, despite an earlier revolt by MPs from his conservative party, which highlighted the uncertainty of his control over his own political force.
He was also forced to publicly reject the possibility the creation of a minority government amid the controversy over pension reform.
