An analysis by Transport and Environment (T&E) found that Carnival’s ships are the most polluting of all sailings to Europe in 2023.

In 2023, cruise company Carnival emitted more CO2 than Scotland’s largest city, according to a new report by T&E.

The data covers all cruise ships bound for Europe last year, including 53 ships owned by Carnival. The second most polluting cruise company in Europe was MSC, followed by Norwegian Cruise Line.

T&E analysts used official carbon emissions data provided by ships.

Last year, Carnival ships bound for Europe emitted 2.55 million tons of carbon dioxide. MSC emitted 1.4 million tons, and Norway – 0.84 million tons of CO2.

By comparison, the latest emissions figures for the city of Glasgow from 2021, with a population of 620,700, were 2.43 million tonnes.

Cruises are one of the fastest growing branches of tourism. The number of cruise ships has grown significantly, from 21 in the 1970s to 515 today, and T&E research shows that since 2000, the world’s largest cruise lines have doubled in size.

Carnival Corporation plc, a UK and US company based in Miami, posted a profit of $1.95bn (£1.54bn) in 2023, following losses of $4.4bn and $7.1bn in 2022 and 2021 during the Covid pandemic. In 2023, 12.5 million passengers used the company’s 92 ships.

In a separate ranking of the damage caused by cruise lines to the environment in 2024, compiled by the American organization Friends of the Earth (FoE), Carnival and its subsidiaries also ranked lowest among 21 cruise lines.
