Details: At a press conference on Tuesday, January 7, Trump again proposed turning Canada into the 51st state of the United States.
“Canada and the United States, that would really be something. There wouldn’t be an artificially drawn border and it would be clear what that looks like, and national security would be greatly improved. Don’t forget: we’re basically protecting Canada,” he said.
He also stated that the US subsidizes the Canadian economy and does not need its “machines and lumber.”
“President-elect Trump’s comments show a complete lack of understanding of what makes Canada a strong country. Our economy is strong. Our people are strong. We will never back down in the face of threats,” the Canadian foreign minister responded.
Trump previously threatened to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods and accused Ottawa of failing to address trade and immigration issues.
Against the background of “tariff threats”, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau began negotiations with him. They were affected by Trump’s repeated jokes about Canada as the “51st state of the United States.”
The day before, on January 6, Trudeau resigned as leader of his Liberal Party and announced that he would resign as prime minister after the election of his successor.
