Details: Canada began to approach Europe after the election of Donald Trump by US President. As noted in NYT, cooperation in the military industry with the European Union shows that Washington’s traditional allies deepen their ties without its participation.
This is done to reduce the US dependence and protect against Trump’s unpredictable decisions that can affect global security and defense deliveries.
The new leader of Canada, Prime Minister Mark Karney, made Paris and London this week the destination of his first foreign trip after joining the post of March 14, calling Canada “most European countries.”
Two officials, one of the EU and the other of Canada, who are directly familiar with discussions, stated that Canada is conducting detailed negotiations on joining a new EU defense initiative aimed at strengthening the European military industry and reducing the US dependence.
According to officials, Canada will be able to become part of the European Register of Military Production, offering its capacity to create European weapons, including the Saab Gripen fighter of the American F-35.
“Canada, according to the terms of the discussion, will also provide preferential access to the EU market of military equipment, an alternative to buying equipment in the United States,” the NYT reads.
Recall:
- Even before President Donald Trump, Trump’s repeated jokes about Canada as the “51st State of the United States”: they say, it will allow her to avoid US tariffs.
- On March 19, Trump stated that Canada is one of the countries with which it is “the most mastening to deal with.”
