Canada Expands Sanctions Against Russian Shadow Fleet Ahead of G7 Meeting

In a significant move, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced the imposition of additional sanctions targeting Russian tankers associated with the country’s shadow fleet. This announcement was made prior to the G7 meeting in France.

The Canadian government revealed that the latest sanctions will add 100 more vessels to the existing list of targeted ships. These measures aim to undermine Russia’s ability to finance its military operations against Ukraine.

Minister Anand emphasized Canada’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and the rights of its people, who are actively defending against Russia’s aggressive actions. She stated, “As long as Russia continues its aggression, Canada will persist in increasing pressure through sanctions, in coordination with our allies and partners.”

To date, Canada has imposed sanctions on over 600 vessels involved in transporting goods and products that benefit Russia.

Background:

  • On February 24, marking the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Canada introduced new sanctions against Russia, including measures against 100 ships from its shadow fleet.
  • On March 26, the UK government authorized military forces to board and seize vessels from Russia’s shadow fleet transiting through British waters.

Canada has announced new sanctions against Russian tankers, adding to its efforts to curb financing for military operations in Ukraine. This comes as the country reinforces its commitment to support Ukraine amidst ongoing aggression from Russia.
