In a recent agreement, Canada and several Nordic countries have committed to enhancing their defense production and deepening security collaboration in response to perceived threats from Russia and remarks made by former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Greenland. This declaration was made public by the Canadian government, highlighting the urgency of security in the Arctic region.
The joint statement emphasizes a dedication to Arctic security and the well-being of local populations, aiming for peaceful coexistence. The countries involved pledged to work in partnership with Indigenous peoples and northern communities to unlock the Arctic’s potential, address climate change, and bolster security.
The agreement outlines several key areas of cooperation:
- Enhancing collaboration to ensure security, sovereignty, and the development of green economies;
- Focusing on the Arctic by engaging with local communities to promote regional development, combat climate change, and strengthen security;
- Supporting NATO’s efforts to reinforce defense in the Arctic and on the eastern flank, including participation in military exercises and missions;
- Expanding the defense industry, fostering innovative technologies, and enhancing resilience against hybrid threats.
The countries reaffirmed that Russia poses a significant threat to the Arctic region, underscoring the importance of supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia for the security of both the region and Europe as a whole.
“We will continue to provide economic, civilian, military, and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and urge all Coalition members to increase their support. We will maintain coordination of our collective assistance, including sanctions, to further limit the Kremlin’s ability to finance its illegal war,” the statement read.
Additionally, Canada and the Nordic nations expressed their commitment to maintaining international trade relations based on established rules. They stated, “Given that technology and international trade are increasingly used as tools of coercion, we commit to enhancing our cooperation in economic security.”
The agreement also emphasizes collaboration in critical minerals, clean energy, and advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence and space programs.
Context on Trump’s Greenland Remarks
In late 2024, Donald Trump described control over Greenland as “an absolute necessity” for U.S. national security. Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Egede, responded by asserting that the island is not for sale.
By January 7, 2025, Trump suggested the use of military or economic pressure to establish control over Greenland and the Panama Canal, publicly calling for the island to be “joined” to the U.S., which he deemed inevitable. He later clarified that his interest in Greenland was based on defense considerations.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that any U.S. invasion of Greenland would signify the end of NATO. Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, criticized linking the island to military intervention as disrespectful.
Internationally, countries such as Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Poland, Italy, Spain, and Denmark issued a joint statement asserting that regional security must be ensured collectively within NATO. On January 14, 2026, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen announced additional funding for armaments to potentially protect Greenland.
During a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 21, Trump assured that the U.S. would not use force to gain control over the island. By January 29, Bloomberg reported that the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland had begun negotiations on a new framework for cooperation regarding the Arctic island.
Greenland, the world’s largest island and an autonomous territory of Denmark, is rich in mineral and oil resources and hosts strategic U.S. military installations.
Canada and Nordic nations have agreed to enhance defense collaboration in response to threats from Russia and remarks by Donald Trump regarding Greenland. The agreement focuses on Arctic security, economic cooperation, and support for Ukraine amidst rising geopolitical tensions.
