Callas: Most states in the world want a rules-based order

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Callas, believes that most of the world’s states are in favor of an order based on rules, not the “laws of the jungle”.

“If I go around the world, I see that there are actually many countries that want a rules-based order, because most of the countries in the world are medium or small, so for them the international order is what protects them. But if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t give you coverage,” the EU official noted.

Callas called the rules set out in the UN charter “very good,” but noted that there is a lack of accountability, namely the tools to punish violators.

“We saw how a member of the Security Council…attacks another country in complete violation of the UN Charter, then you can’t do anything…There is a lot we can build on, and I think we also need to use this opportunity for further development,” Kallas emphasized.

Russia is a permanent member of the UN Security Council – among the functions of this body is the support of international peace and security in accordance with the principles and goals of the UN. In February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
